Well thats it for 2006.
In 2006 my Blog has changed name once, background colour once, changed focus a few times, I have added various new features, done lots of research and I have sure learned a lot about earthquakes and other places in the world.

I have learned more about my own country, New Zealand, as well, doing the more detailed maps in the latter half of the year, coming across place names that I had never heard of before, and visited some more familiar places I know well that keep cropping up in the earthquake lists.

I hope those who have viewed this Blog have enjoyed the ride, it is unfortunate that due to Spammers I had to write in the html code a blocker so that the Comments feature and right clicking did not work here, that is the price we seem to have to pay to keep these idiots from ruining what is just a hobby.

At this point in time I have decided to change the background again and re vamp the maps I use for New Zealand, having found on the www a site where I can zoom in and out and take a snap shot of various areas which show the detailed geography quite well, these are the type I have been trialing since 1st December on the swarm maps.

Rather than let this Blog run on I have started 2 new Blogs, which will load faster (I hope) initially;

one using the same template with a few tweeks added called 40.910south.
I hope you will join me there, click on the logo below for the link;

the other on a different platform using Wordpress, called
40.9103swarm , which is a bit more restrictive on what I can alter to suit my needs, but seems safe enough to enable Comments.

Zeehaen's Bight EQ Report:
There were 2 very-light and one light earthquake in Zeehan's Bight today Dec 18th UTC.
Also a 3.4 west of Hawera and a 2.0 near Whangamomona.
These quakes were on the Taranaki Fault.

Zeehaen's Bight- Cook Strait

When Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman first saw New Zealand in 1642, he interpreted the Cook Strait area as a bight closed to the east. He named it Zeehaen's Bight, after one of the two ships in his expedition.
Below is a reproduction of the map Abel Tasman made back in 1642;

When Captain James Cook of the Royal Navy was exploring the South Pacific this bight was shown on Visscher's chart as Zeehaen's Bight but the Dutch had not determined if it was only a bay or the entrance to a passage back to the Pacific. Cook sailed on to find out the answer and on January 14th as he passed Kapiti, or Entry Island, he could see no end to the bay.

12th January 1770. Captain James Cook's account:
"At five the next morning, we steered S.E. by S. the coast inclining more southerly; and in about half an hour, we saw land bearing S.W. by S. for which we hauled up. At noon the north west extremity of the land in sight bore S. 63 W. and some high land, which had the appearance of an island lying under the main, bore S.S.E. distant five leagues. We were now in a bay, the bottom of which bearing south we could not see, though it was clear in that quarter. Our latitude by observation was 40.27 S. longitude 184.39W. At eight in the evening, we were within two leagues of the land which we had discovered in the morning, having run ten leagues since noon: the land which then bore S. 63 W. now bore N. 59 W. at the distance of seven or eight leagues, and had the appearance of an island. Between this land and Cape Egmont (Mt. Taranaki) lies the bay, the west side of which was our situation at this time, and the land here is of a considerable height, and diversified by hill and valley"

On January 22, 1770, Cook rowed up Queen Charlotte Sound with Banks and Solander in the pinnace for about fifteen miles; but not finding an exit and accompanied by one sailor, he climbed a hill (1,268 feet) on the southeast side (on the present Arapawa Island). To the south, the intervening hills still seemed to hide the exit he sought (into Tory Channel). But he had abundant recompense for his trouble. Of a sudden he saw to the east what surely must be one of the fairest panoramas on earth. In the foreground were various inlets, their connections with the sound and the outlet of the channel still hidden. And just beyond the wooded hills lay a breath-taking sight of blue water extending unmistakably across his line of sight.

"I saw what I took to be the Eastern Sea and a strait or passage from it into the Western Sea. The land on the opposite side seem'd to trend away East as far as the Eye could see, to the SE appear'd as oppen Sea and this I took to be the Eastern.

He was looking northeast and east across Cook Strait that connects the Pacific Ocean with the Tasman Sea, and on the far side he could trace the coast of North Island extending southwest until it curves into the present location of Wellington Harbor. With no more effort than that of climbing a steep hill, Cook had solved the geographic problem that had eluded Tasman.

Cook Strait attracted European settlers in the early 19th century. Because of its use as a whale migration route, whalers established bases in the Marlborough Sounds and in the Kapiti area. From 1840 more permanent settlements sprang up, first at Wellington, then at Nelson and at Wanganui (Petre).

The size of the bight depends to a large extent on the source referring to it. Strict definitions refer to it stretching from the mouth of the Kaupokonui Stream south of Mount Taranaki to the mouth of the Patea River. More loose descriptions of the bight, however, consider the entire lower North Island west coast as far as Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast, as being part of the bight

Two large bays, Golden Bay and Tasman Bay, lie on the South Island coast immediately to its west, and the North Island coast to the west recedes towards the giant curve of the Kapiti Coast and South Taranaki Bight.

Captain Furneaux feels earthquake
On 10th May 1773, at Ship Cove, in the Marlborough Sounds Captain Furneaux of the 'Adventure' wintering at Motuara, records that "his shore-party felt two severe shocks of an earthquake , but received no kind of damage."

This was the first official written recording of an earthquake in New Zealand.

Earthquake Fault Zones

Although Taranaki is not located in the most seismically active area of New Zealand, earthquakes have occurred several times over the last few decades. Known local fault locations include the Turi, Ararata, Waverley zone, Oaonui and Inglewood (and Norfolk) faults, with several more located both on and offshore. These faults are the likely source of large, shallow earthquakes that originate in the region, however the rate of earthquake activity in Taranaki is relatively low compared to many other parts of the country.
The Taranaki Fault is one of the largest known thrust faults in New Zealand.
The fault is part of a system of faults that includes the Waimea, Flaxmore and Manaia faults and the Tarata Thrust . It extends from the Alpine Fault in the South Island to at least offshore Auckland in the north, a distance of over 600 kilometres.

Cook Strait
Four major faultlines run through the region. The West Wairarapa fault runs through the Rimutaka Range; the Ohariu Fault runs close to the west coast, intersecting Porirua Harbour; while the Pukerua Fault starts at Oteranga Bay then continues along the coast. The Wellington Fault begins at Sinclair Head and carries right through the city along the western side of the harbour and through the Hutt Valley to the Tararua Range. Secondary splinter faultlines run off these primary faults, forming valleys.

Quake Frequency

On average there is normally a 2.0-2.9 and/or a 3.0-3.9ML quake somewhere in Zeehans Bight 5 out of 7 days a week, sometimes up to 4 per day.
Larger quakes are not so common.
Starting from the date 1942, and without going into too much detail here, on average most years there were at least one to three 5.0-5.9ML sized quakes (offshore) per year, except for the years 1944,1947,1958,1960,1962,1963,1964,1978,1990,2001 and 2004 when there were no quakes above 5.0ML.

Noteable years for 5+ quakes (since 1942) were... 1948-(one 6.3ML and 3x 5.0+ML), 1949-(one 6.4Ml and 2x 5.0+ML), 1950-(7x 5.0+ML), 1954-(4x 5.0+ML), 1959-(4x 5.0+ML), 1974-(5x 5.0+ML)and 2000-(5x 5.0+ML).
6.0- 6.4ML quakes occured in the following years, 1948-6.3, 1949-6.4, 1974-6.0, 1989-6.1, 1991-6.3, 1995-6.6 and 6.4, 2005-6.4, 2006-6.0.

All the large quakes above 6.5ML occured prior to 1897.

The map below is my Interpretation of what Zeehaens' Bight is, - from Cape Farewell in the SW up to Cape Egmont, Taranaki in the NW down the coast and through Cook Strait to Cape Palliser, Wellington in the SE, across to Cape Campbell in the South Island then along the coast through the Marlborough Sounds, Tasman Bay and Golden Bay back to Cape Farewell.

Felt in the central Bay of Plenty - Rotorua region.

The 4.0 quake hit 5km North of Lake Rotoehu, in Rotoehu State Forest, with aftershocks of 2.6, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 travelling northwards up the Pongakawa Valley between 0311 to 0537 UTC.

On 18th - 25th July 2004 this same area was hit by a swarm of earthquakes, the biggest being 5.4 and included two other quakes of magnitude 5.0, seven with magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.9, and many smaller events. There was severe damage to buildings and services in the Lake Rotoehu and Lake Rotoma areas and widespread minor damage throughout the Bay of Plenty. The largest earthquake was felt as far south as Wanganui. Numerous landslips were triggered by these earthquakes.

For the last month of 2006 I intend to change the style of my Blog.
I have renamed it "40.91 south". which is the latitude co-ordinate for Raumati Beach where I live. (The old name of the Blog was Raumati Beach Earth Observations Station.

A move away from the NZ Weather Records and WorldWide Earthquake events, towards a more detailed record on New Zealand Earthquakes.

A shift to reporting 2.0+ Eqs
According to Geonet Records in 2005 there were approx;
8526 quakes of 2.0-2.99 (Very Minor)
2276 quakes of 3.0- 3.99 (Minor)
255 quakes 4.0-4.99 (Light)
22 quakes of 5.0-5.99 (Moderate)
1 quake at 6.35 (the largest quake of the year on 13.03.05 was located mid way between Patea, Taranaki and Farewell Spit West Coast in the Tasman Bight (Taranaki Bight/ Tasman Bay/ Cook Strait area), 130km offshore NW Raumati Beach.

With a month to go in 2006 there have been;
2417 quakes of 2.0-2.99 (Very Minor)
1741 quakes of 3.0- 3.99 (Minor)
234 4.0-4.99 (Light)
18 (Moderate)
1 quake at 6.0 (the largest quake so far in 2006 was on 15.02.06 located in the same area but 10km SW more towards Farewell Spit.

Quite a significant drop in the 2.0-2.99's especially considering in 2004 there were 9071 and in 2003 there were 10,312 of these "Very Minor" quakes.

From my observations this last week I have noticed these Very Minor quakes can come as individual events, sometimes as foreshocks, or in swarms of 2-2.99's, or also as aftershocks of bigger quakes.

I think it is worth keeping an eye on these "forgotten" quakes.

Below I have provided some details of some of the quakes marked on the map, information is from GNS, USGS, TeAra Encyclopedia of NZ and some local newspaper reports;
23 January 1855
Wairarapa earthquake
New Zealand's largest historical earthquake, a powerful magnitude 8.2, occurred on 23 January 1855. The quake was centred near Wellington and the Wairarapa. At Turakirae Head, the southern end of the Rimutaka Range went up by over 6 metres, and the land shifted about 12 metres horizontally along the western edge of the Wairarapa. There was one casualty in Wellington, and at least four others in the Wairarapa and Manawatu. The earthquake also created a tsunami in Cook Strait and Wellington harbour. The rupture on the Wairarapa Fault lifted the eastern edge of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges by up to 6m and was said to have pushed the ranges about 12m north of previously adjoining points on the east. The ranges west of the Wairarapa town of Featherston actually moved as much as 18.5m north of the adjoining countryside - by far the biggest horizontal movement along a vertical fault line ever recorded.
Raised beaches, Turakirae Head
These bare areas running parallel to the coast are beach ridges that have been raised above sea level by large earthquakes. The youngest raised beach (closest to the present-day shoreline) was uplifted 6.4 metres by the 1855 Wairarapa earthquake. Older ridges have been dated and are associated with earthquakes occurring in 2900 BC, 1100 BC and 1460 AD.

1 September 1888
Amuri earthquake
On 1 September 1888, at 4:12 AM, the northern South Island was shaken by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that was felt from New Plymouth to Invercargill. The worst damage was in the Hope Valley and Hanmer region. During the quake the top 7.8 metres of the original stone spire of Christchurch Cathedral collapsed. The earthquake was caused by movement along a 30-kilometre section of the Hope Fault, from the junction of the Hope and Boyle valleys to the Hanmer Plain. This major fault crosses the South Island from the Alpine Fault at the Taramakau River to the coast north of Kaikoura. Geologist Alexander McKay found farm fences there offset by several metres. This was one of the first documented examples of a large earthquake being caused by horizontal movement of the ground.

8 December 1897
Earthquake near Wanganui
On 8 December 1897, at 2:40 am, an earthquake was felt from Auckland to Christchurch. The earthquake was strongest at Wanganui, where brick walls were split, and a woman was badly injured by falling bricks. Houses on brick and concrete foundations were shifted, windows were broken, and numerous chimneys were damaged. The town's water mains were broken and there was subsidence along the railway line.

22 November 1914
Deep earthquake in the Bay of Plenty
At 8:14 pm on 22 November 1914 the Bay of Plenty region was shaken by an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of greater than 7.2. At Gisborne, the quake damaged chimneys, windows and crockery. In Wellington it was strong enough to knock items off of shelves. The earthquake was very deep, centred some 300 kilometres beneath the Te Karaka area. Because it was so deep, it was felt through much of the country, even in Auckland and Dunedin.

9 March 1929
Arthur's Pass earthquake
On 9 March 1929, the Arthur's Pass National Park area was shaken by a Magnitude 7.1 earthquake. There were no deaths, but the quake caused many landslides and the main highway to the West Coast was closed for several months. The largest landslide was not discovered until over a year later. A 900-metre-high section of mountain peak collapsed onto Taruahuna Pass, close to the epicentre. The landslide continued partway up the flanks of Mt Franklin opposite. About 55 million cubic metres of rock swept 4.5 kilometres down the remote Otehake Valley .The collapsed peak was later dubbed Falling Mountain.

17 June 1929
Murchison earthquake
On 17 June 1929, at 10:20 AM, the northern South Island was shaken by a massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake that was felt from Auckland to Dunedin. Centred near the town of Murchison, the quake triggered at least 50 large landslides. Of the 17 people who died in the quake, 14 were killed by landslides. Slides blocked the Buller and Maruia rivers. Seddonville was damaged by floods when a landslide dam on the Mokihinui River burst. Road damage was so extensive that many roads did not re-opened for months. The settlement was lifted almost half a metre, it was impossible to stand at the worst of the quake, and every building in the town was uninhabitable, many completely destroyed. The 7.8quake, was centred under the White Creek Fault where the 4.5m uplift can still be clearly seen on the other side of the river.
In Greymouth, hardly a chimney was left standing and gas, water and sewage pipes had burst beneath the ground. Railway lines had twisted and the roofs of several coal mines had collapsed.
One of the unusual features of the earthquake was the extremely loud noise it produced, possibly caused by the deep narrow valleys at its centre. The sound of the initial shock was heard as far away as New Plymouth and the aftershocks continued to rumble like thunder for several weeks after the main quake.

3 February 1931
Hawke's Bay earthquakes
New Zealand's deadliest earthquake occurred at 10:48 AM on 3 February 1931. In the magnitude 7.8 Hawke's Bay earthquake, 256 people died - 161 in Napier, 93 in Hastings and 2 in Wairoa. Most people were killed by the collapse of buildings and by falling debris. In Napier fires broke out and burned uncontrolled for two days because water pipes were broken. Fires gutted four hectares of the business district.
Sections of the Napier area were raised nearly 3 metres, and part of Ahuriri Lagoon was drained. The largest aftershock was a powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake. It was unusual in that it occurred ten days after the main earthquake.

24 June 1942
Masterton I Earthquake
On 24 June 1942 at 11:17 PM, the lower North Island was hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake. Centred near Masterton, the quake was felt from Auckland to Dunedin. One man was killed in the Wellington suburb of Kelburn. Over 5,000 homes and buildings were damaged in central Wellington, and Masterton, Carterton, Greytown and Eketahuna also had extensive damage. Another magnitude 7.0 quake shook the region six weeks later, on 2 August. The cost of repairs from these quakes was so great that the government set up an Earthquake and War Damage Commission for earthquake insurance in 1944..

2 August 1942
Masterton II earthquake
At 12:43 am on 2 August 1942, the Wairarapa and Wellington regions were shaken by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, centred near Masterton. It occurred only six weeks after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake had struck the region. One man died in Wellington from gas leaking from a broken pipe.
Damage to buildings in Wellington and towns in the Wairarapa was extensive, due to the cumulative effect of the two earthquakes. Two blocks of Manners Street were closed for several months because of the dangerous state of the buildings.

24 May 1968
Inangahua earthquake
On 24 May 1968, at 5:25 am, the northern South Island was rocked by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that was felt from Dargaville to Invercargill. The quake was centred near the town of Inangahua Junction, near Murchison, and caused massive landslides. Landslides killed two people and blocked roads through the region for months. A large landslide temporarily blocked the Buller River, backing up the river for over 7 kilometres, to a depth of up to 30 metres. Hundreds of people were evacuated by helicopter from the valley downstream of the landslide.

24 May 1989
Macquarie Island earthquake
The magnitude 8.2 Macquarie Ridge Earthquake on May 23rd 1989 was a strike-slip earthquake. It was the largest earthquake recorded anywhere in the world during the 1980's, fortunately the epicenter was located 300 km from Macquarie Island and so the quake did not greatly affect people. However, a small tsunami struck the southern coast of Australia

22 August 2001
South Kermadec Trench earthquake
7.0 earthquake 420 km north-east of Gisborne. There were more than 130 aftershocks, mostly between magnitude 3 and 5, since the quake struck at 6:52 pm. The focal point of the main shock was 33 km deep. Although distant, its large size and relatively shallow depth meant it was felt throughout much of the North Island and as far south as Christchurch. It caused minor damage and a brief electricity blackout at Tolaga Bay, 56 km north-east of Gisborne.
The earthquake was centred at the southern end of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone.

23 November 2004
Puysegur Trench earthquake
The magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck at 9:26 am about 100 km off the southern Fiordland coast at a depth of 33 km. Many people in the lower half of the South Island reported feeling the quake as a long rolling motion. Residents of a number of towns in Southland reporting goods falling off shelves.
People in high-rise buildings as far north as Palmerston North and New Plymouth reported feeling a gentle swaying motion.

24 December 2004
Macquarie Island earthquake
Seismological officials said it was felt throughout Tasmania and the South Island of New Zealand, but because it occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.25 miles) and far from inhabited land, it was barely noticed even by the scientists or penguins on nearby Macquarie Islands. Geoscience Australia said the epicentre of the quake, which struck at 1:59 am (1459 GMT), was 400 kilometres (250 miles) off Macquarie Island and 800 kilometres (500 miles) off the coast of Tasmania, about halfway between Australia and Antarctica.
Seismologist Cvetan Sinadinovski said it caused buildings to shake in the island state for up to 15 seconds, but did not cause a tsunami or unusual tidal activity because it was of horizontal rather than vertical displacement and struck far off the coast.
The earthquake, which was initially registered as 7.8 on the Richter scale, but later upgraded to 8.1, was the largest world's biggest earthquake since one off the coast of Peru in early 2001.

Kermadec Ridge earthquake
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of the Kermadec Islands, at 10.39am GMT
The quake -- which hit at a depth of 148km -- was located some 290km south, south-west of Raoul Island, in the Kermadec Islands chain.
Reports from Whakatane on the east coast of New Zealand said the quake rolled for 30 seconds, while a Wanganui resident on the west coast said the shaking lasted almost a minute. The quake was felt as far south as Christchurch.

This is the second swarm in 4 days to hit the Gulf of Fonseca, see here for events on the 25th October.

The summit cone of Cosiguina volcano contains a 2.4 x 2 km wide caldera, 500 m deep with a lake. The eruption of Cosiguina in 1835 was "Krakatoan" with ash falling on Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica.
It was one of the world's great historical paroxysms and was heard in Jamaica and Colombia. The sun was blacked out for a radius of more than 150 km. The Volcano is now considered dormant.

The earthquake of 14h28m37.85s (the UTC) of day 2006/10/26 has happened in the Tyrrhenian meridional, 20 km to sudest of the island of Stromboli, to one depth of approximately 208.80 km. The magnitudo of the event he is equal to 5.7. The strong one magnitudo has caused to a resentment much extending in all the South Italy, but the elevated depth has sure attenuated the possible effects of the earthquake. The zone of the Tyrrhenian meridional is not new to these events. In this area hundreds of small earthquakes to depth comprised between 10 are recorded every year km (around alla Calabria) and 500 km (nel Tyrrhenian center them). The earthquake today is placed exactly along the zone of deepening of the events, caused from the "subduzione" of the Ionic plate to the disotto of the Calabria and the Tyrrhenian one. Generally these earthquakes are introduced like isolated jolt. Italians have not been recorded retorts at moment (18:00). Considered the depth of the earthquake, not there is risk of tsunami.

Tropical Cyclone (TC) 01p (Xavier), located approximately 415 nm west-northwest of Nadi, Fiji, has tracked north-northwestward at 09 knots over the past six hours. the current best track position has been relocated based on recent animated multispectral and mic-rowave satellite imagery, which reveal that high vertical wind shear has decoupled the convection associated with this system from the low level circulation center (llcc). This satellite imagery and a 251838z quikscat pass indicate that the now fully exposed llcc is tracking northwestward under the influence of strong lower level
southeasterly flow. The forementioned vertical wind shear has contributed to the rapid weakening of this system and full dissip-ation is expected by tau 12. Therefore, this is the final warning on this system by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (navpacmetoccen).

The Pacific Coast of the Central American isthmus was rocked by a series of light to medium earthquakes today. Starting at 0436 UTC a 4.4mb struck SW off the coast of Guatemala, followed at 0442 by 4.4mb 42 km SE Puerto Escondido, Oax, Mexico with a a series of aftershocks 3.6, 3.7, 3.8mb.
At 1815 UTC a 5.0mb quake hit the Gulf of Fonesca, and was followed by 8 aftershocks 3.1-4.2mb.
A 4.3mb quake 92 km offshore SE Salina Cruz, Oax at 2106 and a 4.1 offshore of Nicaragua at 1304 added to a busy day along a 500km stretch of coastline.

TC 01p has intensified rapidly over the past 12 hours due to improved poleward outflow associated with the midlatitude trough south of the system. Mid-level ridging on the eastern periphery of TC 01p in conjunction with the trough continue to steer the system in a generally southeastward direction. TC 01p is expected to track southeast-ward through tau 24 but will track southward afterwards as it encounters increasing vertical wind shear associated with midlatitude westerlies and steer with the low to mid-level ridge. TC 01p will weaken rapidly after tau 24 due to the aforementioned shear.

The Gulf of Corinth, in central Greece, is one of the most seismic regions in Europe. It is possibly the fastest continental rift in the world, with an opening rate reaching 1.5 cm/year. The fault south of the island of Trizonia is situated at a depth of 380 m, it highly contributes to the expansion of the Gulf of Corinth.

Last destructive event of 6.1M occurred in the Gulf close to the city of Egio in June 1995.
On 15 June 1995 (03:16 local time) a strong superficial earthquake (depth 26 km) of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the region of Egio (Northern Peloponnesos-Southern Sterea Hellas). The epicentre area lay offshore, in the Gulf of Korinthos between Erateini and Egio (38.26N, 22.15E).

The mostly affected area of Egio was the densely built urban centre where several types of buildings, of different age and construction materials exist together. The time of occurrence of the main shock played a crucial role in the provocation of a high loss of life, compared with the magnitude of the earthquake. The inhabitants were at home and the rescue teams arrived in the disaster scene from Athens after, at least, 3 hours.
Local authorities as fire brigade, police and the municipality started immediately searchand rescue efforts, by all the available means, with the support of relatives and neighbours into the debris, in a status of general confusion. The two partially collapsed buildings, where 26 lives were lost, became the scenes of very difficult search and rescue operations, due to instability and the aftershocks, continuing for four days after the main event.
This was the worst earthquake affected Greece since 1980, in terms of
loss of life.
This earthquake affected a total 150 000 people. There were 26 lives claimed . Furthermore, 200 people were injured and 2,100 were made homeless. In particular, about 2 000 houses were characterised inhabitable, 2,300 temporarily inhabitable and 3,400 slightly damaged. Extensive damages were observed to many monumental and traditional constructions in the area.

The city of Patras, hub of the western Peloponnese, was damaged by the 1993 earthquake which occurred on 14 July 1993. The mainshock (local magnitude 5.1) was followed on the same day by two aftershocks of magnitudes 4.4 ML and 3.6 ML, respectively.

Mt Tarawera

The volcano is called Mt Tarawera, but the complex is actually comprised of three domes: Wahanga, Ruawahia and Tarawera. Collectively, this complex with the Haroharo complex is called Okataina.

The 1886 June 10 1:30am-6.00am basaltic eruption was one of the most violent in historic time. About 2 cubic km of lava was ejected in only 4 hours.
The main explosive pyroclastic eruption produced an estimated 0.3 cubic miles (1.3 cubic km) of ash. The eruption cloud reached an estimated height of about 6 miles (10 km) above the volcano
The villages of Te Ariki, Moura, and Te Wairoa were buried. The eruption killed 150 people. The hydrothermal deposits at the Pink and White Terraces were also buried.
Earthquake history before the 1886 eruption:
January - Earthquake on 26th at 4.30pm.
March - Earthquake on 30th at 1am.
April - Earthquakes on 22nd at 3pm, 28th at 4.30am, and 30th at 5.30pm.
June - On 10th an eruption occurred at Tarawera, and there were earth tremors at Rotorua from 10th to 24th at frequent intervals, direction NW to SE.
Other warnings:
A two foot high tidal wave happened on Lake Tarawera two weeks before the eruption.
This phenomenon was only known to occur with extensive undergound thermal activity.
Many of the small local rivers and streams around Tarawera had dried up even though it was the middle of winter when the eruption occurred.

Ruapehu Eruption Confirmed

Scientists have confirmed a small eruption which may have sent a water plume about 200 metres into the air above Mt Ruapehu after a trip to the mountain top.

The eruption caused waves about six metres high in the volcanic lake but was a relatively small event which happened reasonably regularly, said Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) coordinator of volcanic surveillance Brad Scott.

He said the scientific team spent some time today on the mountain top.

"There is confirmation as we expected of a very small scale eruption."

Mr Scott said there was no sign of a lahar when volcanic material flows down the mountainside after an eruption.

He said Mt Ruapehu was an active volcano but there had been no similar small scale events for a long time. In the 1980s and 1990s it happened reasonably regularly.

He said the eruption happened last Wednesday night in the middle of a bad storm.

"It would have been a geyser-type eruption. It would have domed up water in the lake and lifted it maybe a couple of hundred of metres high.

"That would have fallen back in the lake and generated waves out across the lake," he said.

Mr Scott said Ruapehu was very active and people had been advised not to go to the summit.

Scientists checking Ruapehu for lahar

Scientists will today have another attempt to check Mt Ruapehu's crater lake after sensors which indicate an impending lahar triggered on Wednesday night.

Department of Conservation scientist Harry Keys says a volcanic earthquake broke a cable which is part of the lahar warning system. Strong winds and cold temperatures have prevented staff from flying over the mountain to check whether there had been a lahar or an eruption.

Dr Keys say there was no sign of a mud flow in the Whangaehu River, however a high risk warning is in place.

Ruapehu Mayor Sue Morris says the mountain appears to have had a small "burp" which is under control at the moment. She says no one knows when mud will break over the walls of the crater lake causing a lahar to flow down the mountain, but the possibility is always on the minds of locals. Ms Morris says the council has good emergency procedures in place, should a lahar be triggered.

DOC is advising people not to proceed past the summit peaks and the crater rims between them. The Whangaehu, Mangaturuturu and Whakapapaiti Valleys are designated a medium risk

Background:
Mt Ruapehu (2797 metres) is an active volcano within the Tongariro volcanic centre. It is New Zealand's largest cone volcano and has gradually been built up and partially destroyed on several occasions during its history. Ruapehu is unusual among the cone volcanoes as it has a crater lake. This means even small eruptions may cause a mudflow or lahar, which can travel down the mountain at great speed, potentially threatening highway travellers and other people below.

The level of the crater lake is influenced by many factors including snow and glacier melt, rainfall, snowfall and volcanic processes. A layer of unconsolidated material called tephra (ash, sandy particles, and larger material) has formed a dam following the 1995-96 eruptions. This tephra dam is unstable and vulnerable to erosion or collapse as the level of the Lake rises.

The lake has been rising steadily since the last eruptions in 1995-96. Between April 2001 and March 2004, the lake level rose by 23 metres.

Some months prior to the 1995 eruption of Mt Ruapehu, a series of shallow earthquake swarms occurred about 15-20 km west of the summit of Ruapehu. Several earthquakes in these swarms were felt, and the largest event was ML 4.8. Crustal earthquakes of ML > 3.0 within 20 km of the summit of Ruapehu have been rather uncommon in recent years.

New Zealand contains the world's highest concentration of youthful rhyolitic volcanoes and extensive sheets of pyroclastic flow deposits. New Zealand, along with Indonesia, leads the world in the abundance of calderas as primary volcanic features.
